The Wild 90’s

🇬🇧 Bobby - the guide whose energy can light up even Malá Strana
Can you imagine a Prague with no rules, no limits and definitely no Google Maps?
Welcome to the 90s — the most chaotic, dangerous and fascinating decade this city has ever lived.

On this tour you will learn:

  • 📍 Meeting point: Náměstí Republiky - Truhlářská 1080/1 (🗺️ View on map)
  • What life was really like across the whole country, not just in Prague, right after the fall of communism
  • What Václav Havel’s amnesty triggered — and why it turned the entire country upside down
  • The most common scams of the 90s: illegal money changers, “sleepers,” and classic street tricks
  • How the first Czech mafia groups were born and which areas they controlled
  • “Creative” privatizations and businesses that disappeared from one day to the next
  • Real stories from clubs, bars and streets where organized crime began
  • Police cases that were never solved… and that nobody wants to talk about today
  • The fashion, music and obsession with everything Western
  • And of course, the sarcastic Czech-Slovak humor that saved us more than once during the Cruel 90’s 😈

About this tour

We start at Náměstí Republiky, where Czech capitalism took its first steps… and tripped quite a few times.
I’ll show you how, after the fall of communism, the streets filled with illegal money changers, “sleepers,” scams, mafia groups and businesses that today would rather pretend they never existed.
We walk through places where cases were written that were never solved (and never will be), corners where the police arrived late — or didn’t show up at all — and areas where former communists magically reinvented themselves as… well, social democrats. 😅
You’ll see bars, clubs and spots where organized crime was born, how “creative” privatizations worked, why Václav Havel’s amnesty turned the city upside down, and how some tourists woke up naked and wallet-less after a supposedly “romantic” night.

This is not a tour for pretty photos.
This is a trip to the early days of freedom: fast, messy, risky and full of real stories.
ll accompanied by that typical Czech-Slovak sarcastic humor — the one that saved us more times than the police ever did in the 90s. 😈

We finish near Národní třída, with recommendations for authentic bars…
and maybe with a clearer idea of why people call this era the Cruel 90’s.

Frequently Asked Questions

The word “free” doesn’t just mean “gratis”; it also means freedom—to choose what you pay at the end of the tour. CzechTours guides don’t earn a fixed salary. They go above and beyond to give you an amazing experience and earn your recommendation. It’s not about money—your satisfaction matters most. Most guests leave €10 or more per person.

Simply choose your preferred tour and time, then fill out the short reservation form. You’ll get a confirmation email right away – no payment needed in advance.

👉 After booking, you can also view, modify, or cancel your reservation anytime through our
tour panel.
If you ultimately cannot attend, we would greatly appreciate it if you could cancel your reservation in advance. That way, we give other travelers the opportunity to join the experience! 😊

Comfortable walking shoes, a bottle of water to keep you going, and plenty of enthusiasm for a great time. Optional: An umbrella, in case the sky decides to get dramatic. ☁️🌧️

Don’t worry—just let us know. You can cancel or change your date at any time, and our guides will truly appreciate the heads-up (honestly!). You can easily manage your booking in the Tour Panel.

Running a few minutes late? No problem—we can share the group’s real-time location so you can catch up during the tour. It’s not ideal… but it’s better than missing out on all the history and juicy communist gossip! 😉

After two and a half hours exploring the city with our guide, you’ll realize that putting a price on this experience isn’t so easy.

Many people show up with just €10 in their pocket… but by the end (after laughing, learning, and comparing with other tours) they choose to support what we do a little more. And we appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts. ❤️

If you’ve spent any time in Prague, you know how much a good meal or a few beers cost… or even a tour that doesn’t give you half the value. So if you enjoyed the tour, thank us in whatever way feels right. 😄

We accept Czech crowns, euros, dollars—and we’re on PayPal and Revolut too.
