The True Crime of the 90s

We will pick you up at your hotel or apartment and together we will head towards Náměstí Republiky, a perfect place to talk about how the new Czechoslovak capitalism began to take its first steps… and how those steps were not always very stable.

It all began on November 17, 1989, when the communist regime collapsed and the country began a rapid transformation toward democracy and a market economy. But the first years of freedom were far from calm.
The “famous” amnesty of Václav Havel released thousands of prisoners and shortly afterwards even triggered a rebellion in Leopoldov prison, one of the most dramatic events of the early years of the decade.

Meanwhile, new opportunities were appearing on the streets… but also new problems.

Illegal money changers, quick scams, nightclubs, improvised mafias and businesses that appeared almost overnight. At the same time, the famous privatizations began, when state companies passed into private hands and some people became millionaires almost overnight.
Some of these businesses ended in one of the biggest criminal and economic scandals of the 1990s: the famous fuel scandal, which cost the state billions.

We will walk through places where many of these stories were born: bars, clubs and corners where organized crime began to grow and where the police often arrived too late… or simply did not arrive at all.
This is not a tour of pretty photos. It is a journey into the darker side of the transformation of the 1990s: a time full of true crime, scandals and real stories.

And all of it told with that Czechoslovak sarcastic humor that saved us more often than the police of the 1990s. 😈

We finish near Národní třída, with recommendations for authentic bars… and perhaps with a clearer idea of why many people remember that era as the Violent 90s.
